N-Butanol (Tech)

N-Butanol (Tech)

n-Butanol (n-Butyl alcohol), a four carbon straight chain oxo alcohol, is a medium-boiling liquid that is useful as a chemical intermediate and as a solvent for ambient dry and baking coatings. It is widely used as an etherification alcohol in the manufacture of amino resins that are used as curing agents in baking and physical-drying finishes. Eastman™ n-Butanol is also a very effective latent solvent for cellulosic lacquers and ambient-cured enamels, reducing formulation viscosity and providing excellent flow and leveling during film formation.

N-Butanol

N-Butanol

n-Butanol or n-butyl alcohol or normal butanol is a primary alcohol with a 4-carbon structure and the molecular formula C4H9OH. Its isomers include isobutanol, 2-butanol, and tert-butanol. Butanol is one of the group of "fusel alcohols" (from the German for "bad liquor"), which have more than two carbon atoms and have significant solubility in water.
n-Butanol occurs naturally as a minor product of the fermentation of sugars and other carbohydrates,[2] and is present in many foods and beverages.[3][4] It is also a permitted artificial flavorant in the United States,[5] used in butter, cream, fruit, rum, whiskey, ice cream and ices, candy, baked goods and cordials.[6] It is also used in a wide range of consumer products.[3]
The largest use of n-butanol is as an industrial intermediate, particularly for the manufacture of butyl acetate (itself an artificial flavorant and industrial solvent). It is a petrochemical, manufactured from propylene and usually used close to the point of manufacture. Estimated production figures for 1997 are: United States 784,000 tonnes; Western Europe 575,000 tonnes; Japan 225,000 tonnes.[4]

Xylene

Xylene

A xylene (from Greek ξυλος, xylos, "wood") is an aromatic hydrocarbon consisting of a benzene ring with two methyl substituents. The three isomeric xylenes each have a molecular formula of C8H10, though the more informative semi-structural formula C6H4(CH3)2 is also used commonly. The xylenes are major petrochemicals, produced by catalytic reforming and also by coal carbonisation in the manufacture of coke fuel. Representing about 0.5–1% of crude oil (depending on the source), xylenes are found in small quantities in gasoline and airplane fuels. Xylenes are mainly produced as part of the BTX aromatics (benzene, toluene and xylenes) extracted from the product of catalytic reforming known as "reformate". The mixture is a slightly greasy, colourless liquid commonly encountered as a solvent. It was named in 1851, having been discovered as a constituent of wood tar. Several million tons are produced annually.[1] In 2011, a global consortium began construction of one of the world’s largest xylene plants in Singapore.[2]

Cyclohexanone

Cyclohexanone

Cyclohexanone is the organic compound with the formula (CH2)5CO. The molecule consists of six-carbon cyclic molecule with a ketone functional group. This colorless oil has an odor reminiscent of peardrop sweets as well as acetone. Over time, samples assume a yellow color due to oxidation. Cyclohexanone is slightly soluble in water, but miscible with common organic solvents. Billions of kilograms are produced annually, mainly as a precursor to nylon.[5]

Production

Cyclohexanone is produced by the oxidation of cyclohexane in air, typically using cobalt catalysts:[5]
C6H12 + O2 → (CH2)5CO + H2O
This process co-forms cyclohexanol, and this mixture, called "KA oil" for ketone-alcohol oil, is the main feedstock for the production of adipic acid. The oxidation involves radicals and the intermediacy of the hydroperoxide C6H11O2H. In some cases, purified cyclohexanol, obtained by hydration of cyclohexene, is the precursor. Alternatively, cyclohexanone can be produced by the partial hydrogenation of phenol:
C6H5OH + 2 H2 → (CH2)5CO
This process can also be adjusted to favor the formation of cyclohexanol.[5]

Uses:

The great majority of cyclohexanone is consumed in the production of precursors to Nylon 6,6 and Nylon 6. About half of the world's supply is converted to adipic acid, one of two precursors for nylon 6,6. For this application, the KA oil (see above) is oxidized with nitric acid. The other half of the cyclohexanone supply is converted to the oxime. In the presence of sulfuric acid catalyst, the oxime rearranges to caprolactam, a precursor to nylon 6:[5]

Butyl Acetate

Butyl Acetate

Moderately volatile, colourless solvent with excellent solvency for cellulose nitrate, polymers, resins and oils. Important solvent in the manufacture of paints, leather and in the chemical and allied industries.

n-Butyl acetate is a clear, moderately volatile liquid with a characteristic ester odour. It is miscible with all conventional solvents such as alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, ethers, glycols, glycol ethers, aromatic hydrocarbons and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Its solubility in water is limited.
n-Butyl acetate is an important solvent in the paints industry on account of its versatility. It is an excellent solvent for cellulose nitrate, resins and polymers and for oils and fats. Its moderate volatility and its resistance to blushing and levelling problems such as orange peel effects make it possible for paints with excellent levelling and gloss to be formulated. n-Butyl acetate is often employed in combination with n-butanol in paints, because n-butanol enhances the resistance to blushing and increases the solvency in many cases. n-Butanol cannot be used in paint systems that have to be free of hydroxyl groups, such as isocyanate paints.

Because of its low water absorption, its high resistance to hydrolysis and its high solvency, n-butyl acetate can also be employed as an extractant in the manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations and as an ingredient of cleaners, essences and fragrances.
